CHAPTER 12

MARK

I witness the moment realization hits—the parting of her lips, the widening of her tormented eyes.

A gasp escapes her, the sound full of anguish through the silence.

“Austin?” She scrambles backward, snatching some of her splayed clothes from the ground. She doesn’t break eye contact as she rushes to pull on her bra. “I don’t believe you.”

I warned her this was going to happen.

I told her of the destruction that would follow us fucking.

“How?” She tugs on her underwear, then her pants, hopping and jostling to get them over her hips. “Why?”

“Good question.” I can’t answer truthfully because I don’t know anymore. “I guess this is about who you’ve become.” I start toward her, needing to eat up the sterile space between us. “How far you’ve fallen.”

“How far I’ve fallen?” She retreats. “You’re kidding.”

“I’ve been watching you. You may have discarded me easily, but I never did the same.” I keep stalking after her.

“Stay away from me.”

“Why? We just fucked. Now you don’t want to get within two feet of me?”

“I thought I was fucking a stranger.” She spits the curse, the vulgarity ten times more severe on her innocent lips.

“We are strangers.” I match her step for step around the sofa, then toward the fire.

“No, we’re not.” She shakes her head. “We were best friends.”

“A lifetime ago.”

“How could you?” She winces. “I shared stories with you at the party last night. I spoke about the friend I grew up with. And you never said a thing.”

She did, and her recollection had killed me.

I’d thought she’d forgotten me. That I was just another person in the rearview on her path to fraud.

I never expected her to have remained virtuous while her charity got swept out from beneath her. I thought her father had changed her from the pure-hearted girl I once knew into his perfect little minion.

“You certainly made our childhood seem whimsical.” I huff under my breath. “But you left out the part where you threw me under the bus and discarded me without a backward glance.”

“Excuse me?” She diverts her path to stomp back over the rug, swiping her blouse from the floor to viciously shove her arms into the sleeves. “Is that what this is about? Payback? Retribution?”

“I wish.” It would’ve been far easier to fuck her over and move on.

“Then what is it?” Her voice rises, the frustration, anger, and fear mingling in a delicious concoction that has my dick showing interest again.

Interest that never should’ve been there in the first place.

“This is about you messing up your life.” I spread my arms wide, encompassing the room around us. “All this was done in a misguided effort to help you right your misdeeds.”

“Misdeeds I never participated in.”

“You should be thankful I brought them to your attention.”

Her eyes widen with incredulity. “Go to hell.” She takes a frantic glance at her surroundings before settling her fury on the scotch glass on the coffee table.

Jesus Christ.

I brace as she snatches the weapon, then hefts it toward my head.

I duck, the projectile soaring past me, the impact hitting the far wall a split second later.
